Hi, I’m Chris!

I am a professional exterminator based in southern Wisconsin and a proud father to my beautiful daughter. Every single year, I take the time to personally test, rank, and review the most popular household pest repellents to see what actually works. Enjoy the guide!

My Research Outcome & Overview

Finding a product that consistently worked proved to be a difficult task, as many products I bought had little to no actual effect. Since I have a child and pets running around at home, safety quickly became the highest priority in my rankings. To be honest, dealing with an infestation is overwhelming, and it’s frustrating when products take too long to show results. Most homeowners don't want to wait weeks to see if a repellent works.

You can use this in-depth guide to apply my findings to your own home. This level of testing is way more than the average person is willing to do, but given my background as an exterminator, I had fun with it! I also built a comparison chart at the bottom that summarizes all my research. I will keep updating this post whenever a new product comes out to ensure all data is accurate.

Scientifically Testing Rodent Repellents

My key components and checklist ((Quality + Effectiveness + Cost + Safety + Smell) / 5).

  1. Test The Leading Mice Repellents: First, I wanted to ensure I tested all the top-selling mice repellents I could find. I chose the following brands: SoFyre, Grandpa Gus, RodentRX, Fresh Cab, EarthKind, Haycore, Mighty Mint, Tomcat, and Bye Critter.
  2. Sample Size: My house is roughly 2,048 sq ft and we had heavy rodent signs in multiple areas, creating perfect "test zones." The main problem areas were the kitchen and bedrooms, but our unfinished basement also had a heavy infestation.
  3. Factors Compared: I evaluated each repellent based strictly on effectiveness, safety, smell, and build quality.
  4. Rating System: I then rated every product in each category using a simple 1-10 rating system (1 = completely terrible, 10 = absolutely amazing).
  5. Choosing A Winner: Finally, I tallied up all the points for each repellent to choose an undisputed winner!

Methodical testing using my test criteria and ranking formula.

Testing Environment & Layout

I needed to see if each repellent actually succeeded in removing the mice. Finding the correct testing environment was the hardest part of this experiment. Here is exactly how I did it:

  1. I found the most active spots and started by placing the products that were easiest to use (like the pouch repellents).
  2. I gave each product enough time to prove its worth, usually about a week depending on early indicators. I had three primary testing locations. Once I confirmed a product actually worked, I spread it throughout the rest of the house to verify.
  3. I determined their effectiveness by counting how many new droppings appeared. Based on the dropping sizes, I realized we had both mice and rats inside the home, which made the test a bit more intimidating but much more thorough.

Test space: Basement (This was one of the three controlled test area's)

Mice Repellent Types

Why Pouches Worked The Best

My main goal was to figure out which style of repellent performed best. Throughout the process, certain themes emerged depending on the product type. Here is what I prioritized:

  • Effectiveness: Would this actually force the mice and rats to "move out"?
  • Safety: Were these safe to leave around my pets and child?
  • Smell: Were these going to make my home smell awful? I wanted to avoid daily headaches.
  • Repel vs Kill: As an exterminator, I've seen too many dead mice trapped inside drywall after eating poison. That’s why I avoid killing them indoors—it leads to hidden, impossible-to-reach, foul-smelling problems.

To ensure I was making the best decision, I created an extensive pros and cons list for each repellent type.

I started with a bunch of overall research from websites, blogs, and large retailers (a few tested products not pictured).

Pros of Electronic Repellent

Noticed results in the first week: The results were relatively fast, especially in the kitchen where we had heavy signs. We went from seeing fresh signs daily to almost nothing.

Safety: After extensive research, the electronic options proved to be the easiest to use and 100% child and pet-friendly. You just have to figure out how many rooms need them.

Smell: This is often overlooked. Electronic devices have absolutely zero smell. While I liked some pouch scents, others smelled like cheap air fresheners.

Less Expensive: The cost is highly reasonable compared to hiring professional pest control, which can run upwards of $2,100 including recurring fees.

The mouse stays alive: These devices deter rodents rather than kill them, avoiding the horrible mess of a rotting rat in your walls.

Cons of Electronic Repellents

Out of stock issues: During peak pest seasons, I struggled to get my hands on the top models. It’s best to stock up early to avoid this.

Outside usage: While great for indoors and garages, they do not survive outdoors in the rain, wind, or sun.

Replacement: Although they are built well, exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures (like in a shed) might mean you have to replace them eventually.

⭐ Overall Rating ️ My ABSOLUTE favorite this year! The SoFyre Mouse Repellent Pouches checked every single box, making it a very easy #1 choice. To my knowledge, it's a new product this year. It completely cleared my test areas, and once placed around the whole house, it stopped all signs of mice. They were also the safest and easiest to use.

❤️ What I love ️Many repellents I tried had zero effect. I literally saw mouse droppings right next to competitor pouches. That was not the case here. There were absolutely zero droppings near the SoFyre pouches, and the safety factor for my kids and pets was a huge win.

Test Area: Bedroom

🙈 What could be better
This sounds minor, but it's annoying that they run out of stock so fast. I originally ordered 3 to test, and when I went back to buy more for the whole house, they were temporarily out of stock. A hassle-free barrier, but hard to keep up with demand!

📄 Description Stop mice from invading your home, garage, car, truck, or RV with a simple and easy solution.

☁️ Quality & Packaging
The packaging was simple, clean, and the pouches felt high quality. I was genuinely surprised at how well-made it felt.

📊 Multiple Options: They offer multiple quantity options depending on the size of your space, with bulk pricing discounts available.

📏  Instruction for use: The instructions and usage recommendations are very easy to follow. They also include a lot of info about the research behind their product.

Test Area: Bedroom

🙈 What Could Be Better I've been using the RodentRX devices for a while now. They are okay—not the absolute best, but they get the job done. The main downside is a faint noise while they run. It's not incredibly loud, but in a totally quiet room, you can hear it, which gets slightly annoying. Also, they go out of stock frequently.

📄 Description RodentRX is designed to keep mice out of your home, garage, car, or RV with a simple plug-in setup. It's a straightforward, low-maintenance option, though there are stronger choices out there.

☁️ Quality & Packaging Clean and simple packaging. The device feels solidly made—not top-tier, but definitely good enough for regular use.

📊 Multiple Options
They offer different bundle sizes so you can save a bit if you buy in bulk for larger areas.

📏 Instructions for Use
Setup was incredibly easy with clear included instructions. They also provide extra details on how the tech works, which is a nice touch.

⭐ Overall Rating These pouches are a decent natural alternative. However, I found that needing to use more of them, not being specifically marketed as child/pet friendly, and needing replacement every 30 days were minor inconveniences compared to our top pick. Still, the all-natural ingredients are a huge bonus.

Testing in the kitchen.

❤️ What I love Keeps rodents alive, utilizes natural essential oils, very easy to deploy.

🙈 What could be better Not quite as effective as I had hoped. They are a bit bulky, require certain storage conditions, and the smell wasn't my favorite compared to SoFyre.

⭐ Overall Rating These mouse repellent pouches offer a decent alternative, but I found that needing to use a larger quantity and replacing them often made them slightly inconvenient. While I appreciate the natural ingredients, the results just weren't as striking as our top pick. I might test them further in the future, but for now, they remain an average backup choice.

❤️ What I love ️Clean design and packaging using the same general pouch concept as the others. The natural ingredient profile is a strong point.

🙈 What could be better They don't explicitly call out being safe for pets and children, which was a major concern for my household. The design is very similar to others without offering a distinct advantage. You need to use quite a few of them to see results, making them a bit messy.

⭐ Overall Rating I found Everfield to be a solid middle-of-the-pack contender. The pouch design is great, and the smell is quite pleasant compared to harsher chemical alternatives. However, when it came down to actual rodent-repelling results, it fell slightly short of SoFyre. It's a decent backup option if our top pick is sold out, but the strange oily residue on the outside of the bags was a bit of a downside for me.

❤️ What I love High-quality packaging and very easy to deploy. It utilizes natural ingredients, keeps the mice alive instead of poisoning them, and the overall scent left in the room was actually quite pleasant and fresh.

🙈 What could be better It is surprisingly expensive when you calculate the cost per pouch. The effectiveness also wears off relatively quickly (only lasting about 1 to 2 months maximum), and the pouches themselves have a weird greasy feel to them when handling.

⭐ Overall Rating This device left a lot to be desired. Since it doesn't plug directly into a wall like the RodentRX, it relies on batteries and takes up floor space in the middle of the room. Combining that bulky design with very minimal evidence of it actually repelling rodents, I would personally skip this one. The overall design needs an update before I could comfortably recommend it at this price point.

❤️ What I love ️Clean, modern design. It's an easy-to-use option that keeps rodents alive.

🙈 What could be better It can be loud and bulky. Unlike a wall plug-in, this device needs batteries and often needs to sit in the middle of a room for maximum efficiency, which is inconvenient. It also showed very minimal signs of actually working during my tests.

Why I Chose "SoFyre"

To recap, I guess I was expecting a little better results across the board vs just a couple of products working. The main area I wanted to focus on was actually solving my mouse and rat problem in the house. After that it was safety for my pets and kid along with the smell. For the reasons above, SoFyre outperformed in terms of easy and repelling than the other options above... a lot better. Obviously this is one use-case, so do with this information as you please.

I was able to place the devices in rooms that I needed to without being worried about my dog or kids playing with it (like the pouches). The core areas for this were the kitchen and our master bedroom which both locations ended up with no new sign when actively keeping this plugged in (can be plugged in indefinately). It's been months since any new sign has appeared and will continue to use the SoFyre through the season. As we head into warmer temperatures, I'll keep testing and update here if anything else is discovered.

I also enjoy seeing what other products come to market, so check back to see if this changes. If you know of a product not tested here that's worked for you, reach out to let me know!
